Removal and Recasting columns in a under construction building

At one of the project which was constructed upto 24 floors , however  it was noted that the strength of concrete achieved of column concrete at 16th and 17th floor is much below the acceptable level.  Even core sampling have failed.

 

With such low strengths it is not possible to carryout Fibre wrapping or Micro concrete encasement for strengthening the columns.  Micro concrete is also not technically and commercially feasible since, if it has to be done Micro concreting has to be done for lower floors also for proper transfer of load.  This will further make it uneconomical  and  loss of floor space.

 

In view of the same it was decided to dismantle the columns and re cast the same.  This critical work was entrusted to  VARSHITHA

 

As part of the process,  two floors above and two floors below have been supported around the column being dismantled using cribs including the effected floor.  The complete slabs have been propped up  by adjustable props.   Additional brackets have been provided  3 floors above for transfer of column load onto the cribs.

 

The column was dismantled using electrically operated chippers and the new concrete was placed (self compacting concrete) within 24 hours with top 500 mm being concreted using Micro concrete.  The jacks were released after 7 days i.e. after the concrete gained atleast 75% of its strength.

 

A total of 41 columns have been thus replaced and the job was completed successfully to the satisfaction of all concerned.  A lot of engineering went into the project including the direction and position of supports being placed, sequence of dismantling etc.
